Full Definition

Ventilator dyssynchrony occurs when there is poor coordination between the patient's spontaneous breathing efforts and the mechanical ventilator's cycling patterns. This can manifest as trigger dyssynchrony (failure to trigger or auto-triggering), flow dyssynchrony (inadequate or excessive flow delivery), cycling dyssynchrony (premature or delayed breath termination), or double triggering. Dyssynchrony increases work of breathing, causes patient discomfort, prolongs mechanical ventilation, and may lead to ventilator-induced lung injury. Recognition and correction of dyssynchrony through appropriate ventilator adjustments, sedation management, or mode changes is essential for optimal patient care.
