Full Definition

Work of breathing represents the metabolic cost of respiratory muscle contraction needed to move air in and out of the lungs. It encompasses energy needed to overcome elastic recoil of the lungs and chest wall, airway resistance, and tissue viscosity. Increased work of breathing occurs in conditions like COPD, asthma, or respiratory failure and is a key indicator for mechanical ventilation. Respiratory therapists assess work of breathing through clinical observation of accessory muscle use, respiratory rate, and patient comfort. Reducing work of breathing is a primary goal of respiratory interventions.
