EIRP Density

The EIRP per unit of bandwidth, expressed in dBW/Hz or dBW/4 kHz, used to characterise the spectral intensity of a transmitted signal.

Full Definition

EIRP density (also called power flux density at source) describes how transmit power is distributed across a frequency band, which is critical for interference analysis with adjacent satellite systems and terrestrial services. ITU Radio Regulations specify maximum permitted EIRP density levels for various frequency bands and orbital positions. Editors should ensure that EIRP density values carry explicit bandwidth reference units (e.g., dBW/Hz or dBW/4 kHz) because omitting the reference bandwidth makes the figure meaningless. EIRP density is distinct from total EIRP, which integrates power across the full occupied bandwidth.

Usage

Usage note: Reference bandwidth must always accompany numerical values. 'EIRP density' and 'power flux density' are related but measured at different points (source vs. Earth's surface); do not conflate.
