A paired specification of modulation scheme (e.g., QPSK, 8PSK) and forward error correction coding rate (e.g., 1/2, 3/4) that together determine the spectral efficiency and link robustness of a DVB-S2 carrier.

Full Definition

In DVB-S2 and DVB-S2X systems, the MODCOD defines both how bits are mapped onto the carrier waveform (modulation) and how much redundancy is added for error correction (FEC code rate). Higher-order MODCODs (e.g., 32APSK 9/10) achieve higher spectral efficiency but require a stronger signal-to-noise ratio, while lower-order MODCODs (e.g., QPSK 1/4) are more resilient but less efficient. In Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) mode, the MODCOD is adjusted dynamically per terminal to optimise throughput. Editors should render 'MODCOD' in all caps as a single word; it is used as both a noun and an attributive adjective ('MODCOD selection', 'the selected MODCOD').

Usage note: Render as one capitalised word: 'MODCOD'. When specifying a particular MODCOD, write the modulation type followed by the code rate without a space (e.g., 'QPSK 3/4', '8PSK 2/3'). Do not write as 'Mod-Cod' or 'Modcod'.
