SSPA

A semiconductor-based high-power amplifier used in satellite ground station transmit chains as an alternative to the TWTA, offering longer operating life and lower operating voltage at the cost of lower maximum output power.

Full Definition

SSPAs use solid-state transistors (typically GaAs or GaN devices) to amplify RF signals, making them more compact, more reliable, and requiring less maintenance than TWTAs. They are widely used in VSAT terminals, smaller ground stations, and applications where output power requirements do not exceed a few hundred watts. In editorial contexts, SSPA and TWTA are often compared in equipment specification sections; editors must ensure the distinction is clearly maintained and that power output figures are cross-checked against link budget requirements.

Usage note: SSPA is a type of HPA. When a document specifies HPA type, confirm whether SSPA or TWTA is intended. GaN-based SSPAs are increasingly replacing TWTAs at lower power levels.
