Full Definition

A TWTA uses a travelling wave tube (TWT) electron device to achieve high gain and high output power across a wide frequency band, making it the dominant HPA technology in professional ground stations and satellite payloads. TWTAs are preferred for high-power applications (hundreds of watts to kilowatts) but require high operating voltages and periodic tube replacement. In editorial work, TWTA must be distinguished from SSPA (Solid-State Power Amplifier), which uses semiconductor devices and is preferred for lower-power or compact applications. Note the British spelling 'travelling' (two l's) is standard in ITU and European documents; 'traveling' (one l) appears in US documents.
