REM rebound

An increase in REM sleep duration and intensity following a period of REM sleep deprivation or suppression.

Full Definition

A compensatory physiological response where the brain increases both the amount and intensity of REM sleep after being deprived of this sleep stage. REM rebound commonly occurs after discontinuing REM-suppressing medications (such as antidepressants), following alcohol withdrawal, or after periods of severe sleep restriction. During rebound periods, patients may experience more vivid dreams, nightmares, or unusual dream content due to the heightened REM activity. This phenomenon demonstrates the critical importance of REM sleep for brain function and the body's drive to maintain sleep stage balance over time.
