Sleep-related hypoventilation is a sleep-disordered breathing condition characterized by sustained periods of inadequate ventilation during sleep, leading to hypercapnia and hypoxemia. Unlike obstructive sleep apnea, this condition involves reduced respiratory drive or impaired respiratory mechanics rather than upper airway obstruction. It commonly occurs in patients with neuromuscular disorders, chest wall deformities, or severe obesity. Diagnosis requires demonstration of elevated CO2 levels during sleep, often measured through transcutaneous or end-tidal monitoring during polysomnography.
