Functional communication training (FCT) is an evidence-based intervention approach that identifies the communicative function of challenging behaviors and teaches more appropriate ways to achieve the same communicative outcomes. This approach is particularly effective for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, or severe communication impairments who engage in problem behaviors to gain attention, request items, or escape demands. FCT requires functional behavior assessment to identify behavioral triggers and maintaining consequences.
