A Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS), also known as a modified barium swallow, is a dynamic radiographic procedure used to evaluate all phases of swallowing function. During the study, patients consume barium-coated food and liquids of various textures while being filmed with fluoroscopy. This allows speech-language pathologists and radiologists to observe the timing, coordination, and safety of swallowing in real-time. The VFSS can identify aspiration, penetration, residue, and other swallowing abnormalities, providing crucial information for treatment planning and diet recommendations. It is considered the gold standard for instrumental swallowing assessment.
