Abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, often with rotational component.
Full Definition
A three-dimensional spinal deformity characterized by lateral curvature and vertebral rotation. Curves are measured using the Cobb angle on anteroposterior radiographs. Scoliosis can be idiopathic (most common, especially in adolescents), congenital, neuromuscular, or degenerative. Treatment depends on curve magnitude, skeletal maturity, and progression risk, ranging from observation to bracing to surgical correction with spinal fusion and instrumentation.

Usage note: Refers specifically to lateral curvature; not to be confused with kyphosis (forward) or lordosis (backward curvature).
