ARVC

Also written as: ARVC — arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy; inherited condition affecting right ventricle, associated with exercise-induced arrhythmias.

Full Definition

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy is a genetic cardiomyopathy characterized by progressive replacement of right ventricular myocardium with fibrous and fatty tissue. This condition predisposes to ventricular arrhythmias, particularly during exercise, and is a recognized cause of sudden cardiac death in athletes. Diagnosis relies on Task Force Criteria incorporating imaging, ECG findings, arrhythmias, and family history. The condition may progress to involve the left ventricle in advanced stages.

Usage

Usage note: ARVD is an acceptable alternative abbreviation but ARVC is preferred in current literature.
