Full Definition
The practice of including 12-lead electrocardiography in preparticipation screening programs to identify athletes at risk for sudden cardiac death. ECG screening can detect conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, and channelopathies that may not be apparent on clinical examination alone. However, interpretation requires expertise in distinguishing normal training-related changes from pathological findings, and false positives can lead to unnecessary restrictions and anxiety.
