A specific breathing pattern characterized by regular oscillations in ventilation during exercise testing, where minute ventilation rises and falls in a cyclical manner every 40-140 seconds. This pattern is considered abnormal and may indicate underlying heart failure, pulmonary vascular disease, or autonomic dysfunction. In sports cardiology, detection of exercise oscillatory ventilation during cardiopulmonary exercise testing can reveal subclinical cardiac impairment in athletes who appear otherwise healthy. The presence of this pattern often correlates with reduced exercise capacity and may warrant further cardiac evaluation.
