Calculated by dividing oxygen uptake (VO₂) by heart rate, it typically increases progressively during incremental exercise testing until reaching a plateau at maximal effort. In trained athletes, oxygen pulse values are characteristically elevated due to larger stroke volumes and enhanced oxygen extraction. Abnormal oxygen pulse responses during exercise testing can indicate cardiac dysfunction, chronotropic incompetence, or impaired peripheral oxygen utilization. This parameter is particularly valuable in sports cardiology for assessing cardiac functional capacity and training adaptations.
