ABA Number

Also written as: ABA — American Bankers Association

A nine-digit bank routing number issued by the American Bankers Association, used by transfer agents to direct electronic dividend payments and other disbursements to the correct financial institution.

Full Definition

The ABA routing number (formally the ABA routing transit number, or RTN) is a nine-digit code assigned to U.S. financial institutions by the American Bankers Association. Transfer agents require shareholders to supply the ABA number when enrolling in direct deposit (EFT) for dividend payments, proceeds from sales, or other cash distributions. The ABA number identifies the receiving bank; it is always used in conjunction with the shareholder's individual account number. Editors should style it as 'ABA number' (not 'ABA #' or 'routing number' alone in formal documents) and should note that it is distinct from a SWIFT code, which is used for international wire transfers.

Usage

Usage note: Style as 'ABA number' in text; avoid abbreviating to 'ABA #'. Distinguish from a SWIFT/BIC code (used for international wires) and from the account number itself. In formal documents, 'ABA routing number' or 'routing transit number (RTN)' may be used for clarity.
