Carrier

An entity, such as a trucking company, airline, or shipping line, that physically transports goods from one location to another.

Full Definition

In logistics and supply chain documentation, a carrier is the party that physically moves freight, bearing responsibility for the goods during transit under the terms of the contract of carriage. Carriers are classified by mode: trucking (road carrier), shipping lines (ocean carrier), airlines (air carrier), and railways (rail carrier). Editors should not use 'carrier' as a synonym for 'freight forwarder' or '3PL', as those parties arrange transport rather than perform it. In insurance and financial contexts, 'carrier' has entirely different meanings; editors must be alert to context.

Usage

Usage note: In logistics, a carrier physically moves goods. Do not use as a synonym for freight forwarder or broker. Clarify mode (road, air, ocean, rail) where ambiguity exists.

In Context

  • "The carrier issued a proof of delivery confirming the consignment had arrived intact." — Freight claims management
  • "Editors should confirm that 'carrier' refers to the transport operator, not the freight forwarder, in contract documents." — Logistics contract editorial review
