bronchoscopy

Pronunciation: BRON-ko-sko-pee

Diagnostic and therapeutic procedure using a flexible scope to visualize and access the airways in critically ill patients.

Full Definition

Bronchoscopy involves insertion of a flexible or rigid scope through the mouth or nose to examine the tracheobronchial tree. In surgical critical care, it's used for diagnostic purposes (suspected pneumonia, hemoptysis evaluation) and therapeutic interventions (mucus plug removal, foreign body extraction, bronchial toilet). The procedure can be performed at the bedside in mechanically ventilated patients, though it may temporarily worsen oxygenation and increase intracranial pressure in susceptible patients.

Usage

Usage note: Procedure involves scope insertion; distinguish from intubation which involves tube placement.
