exploratory laparotomy

Emergency surgical procedure involving opening the abdomen to identify and address life-threatening injuries or conditions.

Full Definition

An urgent surgical intervention where the abdomen is opened through a midline incision to systematically examine intra-abdominal organs for injury, bleeding, or pathology. This procedure is commonly performed in trauma patients with hemodynamic instability or peritoneal signs when the source of injury is unclear. The surgeon inspects all four quadrants of the abdomen, controls hemorrhage, and repairs damaged structures. It is a cornerstone procedure in damage control surgery protocols.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as 'ex-lap' in surgical notes but should be spelled out in formal documentation.
