hyperdynamic circulation

Cardiovascular state characterized by increased cardiac output, reduced systemic vascular resistance, and warm extremities.

Full Definition

Hyperdynamic circulation is a hemodynamic pattern commonly seen in surgical critical care patients with sepsis, liver disease, or thyrotoxicosis, characterized by elevated cardiac output, decreased systemic vascular resistance, and increased oxygen delivery. Clinical signs include warm, well-perfused extremities, wide pulse pressure, tachycardia, and bounding pulses. This compensatory mechanism initially maintains adequate tissue perfusion despite underlying pathology, but may progress to hypodynamic shock if left untreated. In septic patients, hyperdynamic circulation represents the early, compensated phase before progression to distributive shock with cardiovascular collapse.
