Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV) is a respiratory support method that delivers pressurized air through a tight-fitting face mask or nasal interface. In surgical critical care, NIPPV is used for patients with acute respiratory failure who do not require immediate intubation, post-operative respiratory compromise, or as a bridge to extubation. The technique includes BiPAP (bilevel positive airway pressure) and CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) modes, allowing for respiratory support while preserving airway reflexes and reducing complications associated with invasive mechanical ventilation.
