pneumatosis

Pronunciation: new-mah-TOE-sis

Presence of gas within abnormal locations in body tissues, most commonly the bowel wall.

Full Definition

Pneumatosis refers to the pathological presence of gas in tissues where it normally does not occur. Pneumatosis intestinalis, the most clinically relevant form, involves gas within the bowel wall and can indicate serious conditions such as bowel ischemia, necrosis, or perforation. In surgical critical care, pneumatosis may be discovered on CT imaging and requires urgent evaluation to determine if surgical intervention is needed. The finding can range from benign to life-threatening depending on the underlying cause and clinical context.
