targeted temperature management

Also written as: TTM — targeted temperature management

Therapeutic cooling protocol for comatose patients following cardiac arrest to improve neurologic outcomes.

Full Definition

Targeted temperature management involves controlled cooling of patients who remain comatose after return of spontaneous circulation from cardiac arrest. This neuroprotective strategy typically maintains core body temperature between 32-36°C for 12-24 hours, followed by controlled rewarming. TTM is part of standardized post-cardiac arrest care and requires specialized equipment, sedation, and neuromuscular blockade in the surgical ICU setting.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred term over 'therapeutic hypothermia'; commonly abbreviated as TTM.
