Chemical indicators are monitoring devices that undergo a visible change when exposed to one or more sterilization parameters such as time, temperature, or chemical concentration. They are classified into six types (Class 1-6) based on the number of parameters they monitor and their intended use. While chemical indicators provide immediate visual feedback about sterilization conditions, they do not guarantee sterility and must be used in conjunction with biological indicators for complete process validation. Chemical indicators should be placed both inside and outside of instrument packages to monitor sterilant penetration and overall process exposure.
