Ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization is a chemical sterilization process that uses ethylene oxide gas to sterilize medical devices that cannot withstand the high temperatures of steam sterilization. The process requires careful control of gas concentration, temperature, humidity, and exposure time to achieve effective sterilization. EtO is particularly valuable for complex electronic devices, plastic components, and delicate instruments. However, the process requires extensive aeration periods to remove toxic residues, specialized handling procedures due to the carcinogenic nature of EtO, and environmental controls. The complete cycle, including aeration, can take 12-24 hours.
