Load configuration refers to the strategic placement and arrangement of instruments, packaging, and other items within a sterilizer chamber to maximize sterilization effectiveness and efficiency. Proper load configuration considers factors such as sterilant circulation patterns, heat distribution, package size and density, instrument orientation, and air removal requirements. Poor load configuration can result in cold spots, inadequate sterilant penetration, extended cycle times, or sterilization failures. Standard operating procedures typically specify load arrangement patterns, maximum load densities, and prohibited configurations for different sterilizer types and load compositions.
