The irreversible denaturation of proteins on instruments caused by excessive heat during initial cleaning, making subsequent removal difficult.

Full Definition

Protein coagulation occurs when blood, tissue, and other protein-containing materials on surgical instruments are exposed to temperatures above 60°C (140°F) during the initial cleaning phase, causing proteins to denature and bind tightly to instrument surfaces. This thermal fixation makes subsequent protein removal extremely difficult and may require aggressive chemical treatment or render instruments permanently stained or damaged. Prevention of protein coagulation is a fundamental principle in instrument reprocessing, requiring careful temperature control during point-of-use treatment and initial cleaning phases.
