Soil challenge testing is a systematic approach to validating cleaning processes by deliberately contaminating surgical instruments with defined amounts and types of organic and inorganic soils that simulate worst-case clinical conditions. Test soils may include blood, tissue debris, bone fragments, saline, and other surgical contaminants applied in measured quantities to instrument surfaces and lumens. After subjecting these artificially soiled instruments to the standard cleaning process, results are evaluated using visual inspection, protein detection, and other analytical methods. This testing provides objective evidence that cleaning procedures can handle realistic soil loads and identifies process limitations before they affect patient safety.
