Axillary lymph node dissection; surgical removal of lymph nodes from the axilla, typically performed for breast cancer staging and treatment.

Full Definition

Axillary lymph node dissection involves surgical removal of lymph nodes from one or more levels of the axilla, most commonly performed in breast cancer management. The procedure may involve Level I, Level II, or Level III lymph node groups, with Level I and II dissection being standard for most cases. ALND provides important staging information and regional disease control but carries risks of lymphedema, shoulder dysfunction, and sensory changes. With the advent of sentinel lymph node biopsy, ALND is now more selectively applied, primarily reserved for cases with positive sentinel nodes or clinically involved axillary nodes. The extent of dissection and number of nodes removed significantly impact both staging accuracy and complication rates.
