Full Definition

The thoracic duct is the largest lymphatic vessel in the human body, running from the abdomen through the posterior mediastinum to drain into the left subclavian vein. It carries chyle (lymphatic fluid containing digested fats) from most of the body back to the systemic circulation. In thoracic oncology, the thoracic duct is at risk of injury during esophagectomy, mediastinal lymph node dissection, and other extensive thoracic procedures. Injury to the thoracic duct results in chylothorax, a potentially serious complication requiring prompt recognition and management. Understanding the anatomical course and variations of the thoracic duct is essential for thoracic surgeons.
