cricothyrotomy

Emergency surgical airway procedure through the cricothyroid membrane when standard intubation fails.

Full Definition

Cricothyrotomy is a life-saving emergency procedure performed when conventional airway management has failed or is contraindicated. The surgeon makes an incision through the skin and cricothyroid membrane, creating a direct opening into the trachea below the vocal cords. This procedure is typically reserved for 'can't intubate, can't ventilate' scenarios in trauma patients with severe facial injuries, airway obstruction, or cervical spine concerns that preclude standard intubation techniques.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from tracheostomy, which is performed lower on the trachea and typically as a planned procedure
