Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma

Also written as: FAST — Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma

A rapid ultrasound examination used to detect free fluid in the abdomen and pelvis of trauma patients.

Full Definition

Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST) is a rapid, bedside ultrasound examination designed to detect hemoperitoneum in trauma patients by identifying free fluid in four key anatomical areas: the hepatorenal recess, splenorenal recess, pelvis, and pericardium. This non-invasive diagnostic tool has become standard in trauma evaluation, allowing clinicians to quickly assess for internal bleeding without moving unstable patients to radiology. The FAST exam can be performed repeatedly and has largely replaced diagnostic peritoneal lavage in many trauma centers.

Usage

Usage note: When abbreviated, use 'FAST exam' not 'FAST scan'. The full term should be written out on first use in formal documentation.
