pelvic binder

External circumferential compression device applied to stabilize suspected pelvic ring fractures in trauma patients.

Full Definition

A temporary external fixation device consisting of a circumferential belt or sheet wrapped around the pelvis at the level of the greater trochanters to provide mechanical stability for pelvic ring disruptions. The binder reduces pelvic volume, potentially controlling hemorrhage from cancellous bone surfaces and torn vessels. Application is typically performed in the emergency department for patients with suspected unstable pelvic fractures and hemodynamic instability, serving as a bridge to definitive fixation or angioembolization.

Usage

Usage note: Document location of application (greater trochanter level) and patient response.

In Context

  • "A pelvic binder was applied immediately upon arrival for the unstable pelvic fracture." — Trauma resuscitation note
  • "The pelvic binder remained in place until definitive fixation could be performed." — Orthopedic consultation
