bladder neck contracture

Narrowing of the bladder neck resulting in bladder outlet obstruction and voiding difficulties.

Full Definition

A condition characterized by fibrotic narrowing of the bladder neck, typically occurring as a complication following prostate surgery (particularly TURP or radical prostatectomy) but can also be congenital or idiopathic. The contracture impedes normal urine flow, leading to symptoms of bladder outlet obstruction including weak stream, hesitancy, incomplete emptying, and potential urinary retention. Diagnosis is confirmed through cystoscopy and urodynamic studies. Treatment options include dilation, transurethral incision of the bladder neck, or more extensive reconstructive procedures for recurrent cases.

Usage

Usage note: May be abbreviated as BNC in clinical notes. Specify timing relative to previous procedures when applicable.
