Full Definition

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive treatment modality that uses focused shock waves generated outside the body to fragment kidney and ureteral stones. The procedure employs either electrohydraulic, electromagnetic, or piezoelectric generators to create shock waves that are focused on the stone using fluoroscopic or ultrasonic guidance. The fragmented stone pieces are then passed naturally through the urinary system. ESWL is most effective for stones smaller than 2 cm located in the kidney or upper ureter. Success rates vary depending on stone composition, size, location, and patient factors. Contraindications include pregnancy, bleeding disorders, and certain anatomical abnormalities.
