Full Definition

An intravenous pyelogram (IVP) is a radiographic imaging study that uses intravenous contrast material to visualize the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. During the procedure, contrast is injected intravenously and serial X-ray images are taken as the contrast is filtered by the kidneys and travels through the urinary system. IVP can identify structural abnormalities, obstructions, stones, and functional impairments of the urinary tract. While largely superseded by CT urography in many clinical settings, IVP remains valuable for specific indications and provides excellent anatomical detail of the collecting system.
