Full Definition

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the gold standard surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia causing bladder outlet obstruction. The procedure involves removing excess prostate tissue using an electrocautery loop inserted through the urethra. TURP is performed when medical management fails to adequately relieve lower urinary tract symptoms or when complications such as urinary retention, recurrent infections, or bladder stones develop.
