Full Definition
Urethral catheterization involves the insertion of a catheter through the urethral opening into the bladder to drain urine, irrigate the bladder, or instill medications. This procedure can be performed for diagnostic purposes, to relieve urinary retention, monitor urine output, or maintain bladder drainage after surgery. Catheters may be left in place (indwelling) or removed immediately after use (intermittent). Proper technique is essential to prevent urethral trauma and reduce infection risk.
