contrast staining

Persistent contrast retention within tissues or vessel walls visible on delayed imaging phases.

Full Definition

Contrast staining refers to the persistent retention of contrast material within tissues, vessel walls, or pathological structures that becomes apparent on delayed imaging phases. This phenomenon typically indicates increased vascular permeability, inflammation, or abnormal tissue composition that allows contrast accumulation beyond normal circulation time. In vascular imaging, contrast staining can be seen in conditions such as arterial dissection, inflammatory vasculopathy, or vessel wall pathology. The pattern and duration of staining provide important diagnostic information and must be distinguished from active contrast extravasation or normal tissue enhancement patterns.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from active extravasation and specify timing of delayed images.
