Steal phenomenon describes a pathological condition where blood flow is diverted away from one vascular territory to supply another area with lower resistance, potentially causing ischemia in the donor territory. This occurs when there is a significant pressure gradient between vascular beds, commonly seen in subclavian steal syndrome, coronary steal, or cerebral steal syndromes. The phenomenon can be demonstrated on imaging through reversed flow patterns, differential enhancement timing, or provocative testing with vasodilators. Understanding steal physiology is crucial for interpreting hemodynamic studies and planning therapeutic interventions to restore normal flow distribution.
