vasospasm
Sudden constriction of blood vessels, often seen in cerebral arteries following subarachnoid hemorrhage or in coronary arteries.
Full Definition
Vasospasm is the sudden, involuntary constriction of blood vessels that can significantly reduce blood flow and cause ischemic complications. In vascular imaging, vasospasm appears as focal or diffuse narrowing of vessel caliber that may be reversible with pharmacological intervention. Cerebral vasospasm following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage is a well-recognized complication that can lead to delayed cerebral ischemia. Coronary vasospasm can cause chest pain and cardiac events even in the absence of significant atherosclerotic disease. Recognition of vasospasm on imaging studies is crucial for appropriate treatment selection.
Usage
Usage note: Often requires differentiation from fixed stenotic lesions in imaging reports.
