A balloon guide catheter (BGC) is a specialized catheter system featuring an inflatable balloon at its distal tip, designed to temporarily occlude blood flow during neurovascular procedures. When inflated, the balloon creates proximal flow control, preventing distal embolization of clot fragments during thrombectomy procedures. The BGC also enables aspiration of the entire column of blood and debris, significantly improving first-pass recanalization rates and reducing procedural complications. This technology has become standard of care in mechanical thrombectomy for acute stroke, providing both embolic protection and enhanced clot retrieval efficacy.
