blue toe syndrome

Clinical manifestation of distal embolization causing cyanotic digits despite palpable pedal pulses.

Full Definition

Blue toe syndrome is a clinical condition characterized by acute onset of painful, cyanotic discoloration of one or more toes in the presence of palpable pedal pulses, indicating preserved macrovascular circulation. This paradoxical presentation results from embolization of atherosclerotic debris, thrombus, or other material to the digital arteries, causing microvascular occlusion. Common sources include ulcerated aortic or iliac plaques, atrial fibrillation, endocarditis, or paradoxical embolism. The condition may occur spontaneously or following vascular interventions, anticoagulation, or catheter-based procedures. Recognition is important as it may herald more serious embolic events or indicate unstable proximal atherosclerotic disease.

Usage

Usage note: Also called 'purple toe syndrome' but 'blue toe' is the more commonly accepted term in literature.

In Context
