The coils, typically made of platinum or stainless steel, are delivered through microcatheters and deployed at the target site where they create a mechanical framework for clot formation. This technique is commonly used for treating cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and bleeding vessels. The coils may be bare metal or coated with bioactive materials to enhance thrombogenicity. Success depends on proper coil selection, adequate packing density, and appropriate patient anatomy.
