A distal embolic filter is a specialized protection device consisting of a deployable mesh filter attached to a guidewire, designed to capture embolic debris that may be liberated during endovascular interventions. The filter is positioned distal to the treatment site before intervention begins, allowing normal blood flow while trapping particles that could cause downstream vessel occlusion or organ damage. These devices are particularly valuable during carotid artery stenting, saphenous vein graft interventions, and procedures in vessels supplying critical organs. The captured debris is retrieved along with the filter at procedure completion, and the collected material can provide valuable information about plaque composition and embolic risk.
