TEVAR
Pronunciation: TEE-var
Also written as: TEVAR — Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair
Minimally invasive procedure to treat thoracic aortic aneurysms using endovascular stent-grafts.
Full Definition
Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) is a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure used to treat thoracic aortic aneurysms, dissections, and traumatic injuries. The procedure involves deploying a covered stent-graft within the thoracic aorta via femoral or iliac artery access to exclude the pathological segment from circulation. TEVAR has become the preferred treatment for many thoracic aortic conditions due to lower perioperative mortality compared to open surgical repair. Success depends on adequate proximal and distal landing zones and absence of significant arch vessel involvement.
Usage
Usage note: Always capitalize as TEVAR when used as acronym; distinguish from EVAR (endovascular aneurysm repair) which refers to abdominal procedures.
