blue toe syndrome

Acute digital ischemia caused by cholesterol or platelet emboli, typically from proximal arterial sources.

Full Definition

Blue toe syndrome refers to the sudden onset of painful, cyanotic digits caused by microemboli, most commonly cholesterol emboli or platelet plugs originating from proximal arterial sources such as ulcerated atherosclerotic plaques or aneurysms. Despite the name, the condition can affect fingers as well as toes and may present as isolated digital ischemia or as part of a more extensive embolic shower. The presence of palpable pedal pulses in the setting of digital ischemia is a key diagnostic feature that distinguishes this condition from large-vessel occlusive disease.

Usage

Usage note: Also called 'trash foot' in colloquial usage, though 'blue toe syndrome' is preferred in formal documentation.
