Full Definition
Pulse deficit occurs when the peripheral pulse rate is lower than the heart rate detected by cardiac auscultation or ECG monitoring. This finding suggests that some cardiac contractions are not generating sufficient stroke volume to create palpable peripheral pulses. Common causes include atrial fibrillation, premature ventricular contractions, or severe heart failure. In vascular patients, pulse deficit may indicate compromised cardiac function affecting peripheral perfusion.
