Blue toe syndrome presents as acute onset of blue or purple discoloration of one or more toes, usually resulting from sudden arterial occlusion due to embolic material or in-situ thrombosis. Despite the name, this condition can affect fingers as well as toes. The syndrome often indicates upstream vascular pathology such as atherosclerotic plaque rupture, aneurysmal disease, or cardiac sources of emboli. In vascular surgery documentation, this clinical finding serves as an important diagnostic clue requiring urgent investigation and intervention. The condition can progress rapidly to tissue necrosis without prompt treatment.
