bypass graft

Surgical conduit that redirects blood flow around an occluded or stenotic arterial segment to restore distal circulation.

Full Definition

A surgical procedure and the resulting conduit that creates an alternate pathway for blood flow when native arteries are severely diseased. Bypass grafts can be constructed using autogenous tissue (patient's own vein or artery) or prosthetic materials (Dacron, PTFE). The choice of conduit depends on the anatomic location, expected flow rates, and infection risk. Common configurations include aortobifemoral, femoropopliteal, and carotid-subclavian bypasses. Success is measured by graft patency, symptom relief, and limb salvage. Long-term surveillance is essential to detect graft stenosis or occlusion that may require revision.
